White Sands Pupfish seeking best season ever in 2014

News Image
Dec 4 2013 12:00AM

The White Sands Pupfish will begin

The White Sands Pupfish will begin their 4th year in the Pecos League this May. Optimism is high in Alamogordo. After having another down year fans are looking forward to Spring Training. Alamogordo was once the center of the Pecos League and hosted the first two All-Star Games. There will never be a city that supports their team like Alamogordo supports the Pupfish. Coach Ryan Hanson will take the reigns of the Pupfish and is in process of building the 2014 team. Some of the best Pecos League Players have played in White Sands. Despite all of the support the Pupfish have never won a playoff game and only qualified for the playoffs once. This despite playing in a division that has Roswell and Alpine as the Pecos League Champions all three years.

Wally Anderson has recently taken over as vice president of baseball operations for the Pupfish. "The Pupfish are great for the city of Alamogordo and the Tularosa Basin. We have fallen behind the other cities and teams in this league and one problem has been coaching, with four coaches in four years. We have always had the players to win from day 1.

"We need a coach and his staff that cares about community and becomes involved with it. Prior coaches had no interaction with the community, except assistant coach Ryan Parent, two years ago. They all say they will be involved with their city, saying they will do this and they will do that and nothing happens. It doesn"t appear to be the same in other cities and coaching staffs in the league, and that is why they have had success.

I still believe in large part, the Alamogordo community doesn"t know we have a professional baseball team here. It will be my responsibility to change that, and I will need the coaching staff and incoming players to help. Our 2014 Pupfish team will be challanged on and off of the field to change that image, if they want to succeed."

Trinidad Triggers Manager and longtime Alamogordo Resident JD Droddy:
"The Pupfish need an identity of some sort. Right now they are the shadow of Alpine and Roswell. They never really have had a coach that wanted to be there."

Pecos League Commissioner Andrew Dunn:
"All of the coaches have put good effort in. I think 2014 will be a good year for the Pupfish they will have a better year. The Pupfish have always had good teams from day 1. We have some new promotions and some exciting things planned for 2014." The Pupfish open Spring Training May 5th before opening the season May 14th against Roswell.

The White Sands Pupfish have been eliminated from the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row. They will finish their home season with a four game series against Trinidad Triggers. The Pupfish are nestled in between Pecos League Powerhouses Roswell and Alpine in the Southern Divison of the Pecos League which makes the playoffs a tough task. The 2013 Pupfish had a great pitching staff and some very good hitters. The Pupfish were dominated by Roswell and Alpine which gave them no chance to enter the playoffs. A very slow start in May didn"t help either. Justin Kuks started the All Star Game for the Southern Division and is now pitching for the El Paso Diablos. Cody Collins has one of the best swings in the Pecos League and had a great year playing a variety of infield positions. JJ Costantino lead the team in average and make the All-Star Team. Eric Zagone and Chris Peacock have lead the team in innings pitched.

Freezy Smalls got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He tossed one inning of shutout ball. Smalls struck out none, walked none and gave up no hits.

Chris Peacock couldnt get it done on the rubber for the White Sands Pupfish, taking a loss. He lasted just five innings, walked two, struck out six, and allowed four runs.

The White Sands Pupfish (17-17) refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against the Santa Fe Fuego (12-19), recording a 15-6 victory on Monday at Aquarium.

Six runs in the first three innings allowed the White Sands Pupfish to put the game away early. An RBI double by George Ban, an RBI single by Mark Leacox, and an RBI single by Leacox during the first inning and a two-run home run by Christian Ramirez in the second inning fueled the White Sands Pupfishs offense early.

Leacox racked up three RBIs on two hits for the White Sands Pupfish.

Anthony Welsh racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Santa Fe Fuego. He singled in the second inning and homered in the fourth innings.

Chris Peacock improved to 4-2 on the year by picking up the win for the White Sands Pupfish. He allowed three runs over five innings. Peacock struck out four, walked two and gave up seven hits.

Josh White (1-2) took the loss for the Santa Fe Fuego. He allowed six runs in three innings, walked one and struck out none.

SANTA FE — After a long string of losses against southern division teams, Santa Fe finally got back on the winning side of the ledger Saturday, riding the pitching of Kevin Camacho to a 10-3 victory over the Pupfish.

“I think our guys played probably as well as we’re capable of,” said Santa Fe manager Bill Moore. “We pitched well. We played pretty solid defense. And swung the bat. Had some timely hits. I think we had several two-out RBIs. We preach a lot about when our team scores, we’ve got to throw a zero back at them, and when their team scores, we need to score back. And I think we did a pretty good job at that tonight.”

They did an excellent job, scoring in four innings where White Sands didn’t get anything across, and matching or beating the ‘Fish run totals in the two where White Sands did score.

And, they did it against Justin Kuks, who last time on the mound had a light-out performance to bring his record to 4-0. The Fuego handed him his first loss.

SANTA FE — There was very little scoring in Santa Fe Friday as Fort Marcy Park — usually the site of multiple runs — played host to a pitcher’s duel, with White Sands getting the only run of the game in the top of the first, then holding off a ninth-inning comeback try by the Fuego to win 1-0.

“We did great,” said Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz. “We played great defense behind Eric Zagone. Zagone threw his butt off today. The best game I’ve seen pitched all year, especially in a park like this. To put up zeros, it was amazing. It was a great game to be a part of. It was a lot of fun.”

“We played excellent defense and our pitcher was outstanding,” agreed Santa Fe manager Bill Moore. “Unfortunately, they did the same thing and they got the only run of the game. I honestly believe, this is my second year here at Fort Marcy and it’s a very small ball park, and I don’t ever recall a 1-0 game at Fort Marcy involving the Pecos League before. SANTA FE — Rain stopped the game between White Sands and Santa Fe for about 30 minutes between the fourth and fifth innings, and forced it to end after eight after it began coming down again. But nothing could stop the Pupfish as they put up nine runs in the eighth to break open what had been a competitive game but somewhat sloppy between the Fuego and ‘Fish, winning 16-11.

“We got our ass kicked,” said an understandable frustrated Santa Fe manager Bill Moore. “You can put that in the newspaper. Our bullpen gave up nine runs in the top of the eighth inning.”

Santa Fe seemed to have control early, but couldn’t hold on for the final outs, and the early lead meant nothing to Moore.

“Obviously we didn’t play well enough to win at any point,” he said.

SANTA FE — Wednesday, Santa Fe and White Sands met for the first time this season, and after descriptions of Fort Marcy Park proved to be true, the Pupfish came away with a close 15-12, fueled by a lot of big runs.

“It was good,” said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. “High scoring like we expected. Everything everybody said about this place was true.”

But it took a bit for that big scoring to get underway. Through the first four innings, the ‘Fish held a slim 2-1 lead, with White Sands scoring in the third on J.J. Costantino’s first professional home run after the Fuego went up 1-0 in the first when Josh Barnett singled and scored on a Jimmy Maxwell single.

Things got a lot more interesting in the fifth as both teams scored big.

The Pupfish got singled from starting pitcher Chris Peacock and Constantino, but they also got two outs. But Munoz singled, Collins walked and George Ban hit a grand slam home run, taking advantage of the short right-field fence to make it 7-1.

ALAMOGORDO — The big story at the Aquarium in Alamogordo is Pupfish pitcher Justin Kuks.

Kuks threw a two-hitter against Taos, striking out nine and walking four in a 5-0 victory over the normally hot-hitting Blizzard.

“The guy’s lights out,” said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. “He’s been lights out for us all year. This was by far his best start. He just shut out the best-hitting team we’ve seen so far, so that says a lot about him.”

“All the scouting reports were correct. He can deal,” agreed Taos manager Matt Leahy. “He kept us off balance on every count. Every hitter was complaining about being off balance. About being not comfortable. At the end of the day when it happens to a team that has this caliber offense, you just tip your hit and forget about it.”

And add to that pitching performance the fact Kuks was 2-for-4

ALAMOGORDO — While White Sands was looking at two big innings as the reason for its 14-10 loss to Taos, Blizzard manager Matthew Leahy was crowing about both his relief pitching — something that suffered early in the season — and base running.

“We just had a couple of big innings where we gave up five in one inning and four in another and that was that,” said Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz. “Can’t give up big innings. Big innings are killing us.”

“Our relief pitching. Relief pitching. Relief pitching,” Leahy said. “Our bats, we’ll battle with anybody. White Sands has yet to prove they can do anything against our relief pitching. Our team has scored 14 runs before, and we will again. But to steal five bases in a game, that’s the most impressive thing. That what we strive to be; 85-90 percent successful on stolen bases.”

ALAMOGORDO — It was a pitcher’s duel at the Aquarium Sunday afternoon, as Taos and White Sands fought to a 6-5 Blizzard victory. Both starters gave up all the runs with relievers on both teams pitching outstanding games.

It was something Taos manager Matthew Leahy has been waiting for all season.

"We did well," he said. "Like the last couple of games, we pitched. We pitched our way out of situations. And our bats will always have our backs. They’ll balance out, but our pitchers really stepped up to it today and pitched extremely well. One of the best-pitched ball games in the later innings that I’ve seen. This is the type of stuff, that with the right guys, it makes it a lot easier for the manager. And we got the right guys come in and it worked out well for us."

While the Pupfish got most of their runs in one big inning, the Pupfish chipped away.

TRINIDAD, Colo. -- It was a close game between Trinidad and Raton at Central Park Saturday night, but once again, the Triggers struck from behind for the 9-6 victory.

"I told the guys, its just another routine come-from-behind win for the Triggers," said Trinidad manager J.D. Droddy. "Thats how we play. If we cant get to your starting pitching well get to your relievers. Their starting pitcher did a heck of a job. He struck out 10 guys. Did a great job, but as soon as they took him out, we started pounding on them a little bit."

Osos manager Ray Hancock said almost exactly the same thing.

"We played a great game tonight. Starting pitcher went seven innings. Will Casey gave everything he had. We just could not help him out of the bullpen. The bullpen just gave up a couple of three hits. Loaded the bases. Brought another reliever in and he gave up a double that cleared the bases. We just couldnt get it going. There were no errors. Nine or 10 hits. The ballgame really should have been ours. Just dont have the pitching to close out the games, bottom line."

Raton drew first blood, getting one run off singles by Stedman Smith, Michael Lange and Zach Kreegar in the first. The Triggers took the lead in the bottom of the stanza on back-to-back home runs by Jacob Fabry and Sam DiMatteo, then went up 3-1 in the third on a Matt Hunt double and Fabry single.

But the starters got through the next few innings unscathed until the top of the sixth, when the Osos put up four runs to take a 5-3 lead.

With two outs, Kreegar hit a solo home run. Louie Saenz tripled and came home on a Nicholas Hinojo single. A single by Casey, a hit batter and a Smith single plated four runs for Raton.

But in the seventh, after Casey gave up a one-out single to Andrew Azzopardi, Logan Morelloi gave up a Bryce Miller single; Jesse Meier did the same to Matt Hunt; and Brian DelRosso gave up a 3-RBI double to Fabry, a DiMatteo triple and a wild pitch that scored DiMatteo.

Trinidad was back on top, 8-5.

Both teams put one run on the board in the eighth. Cody Langham scored on an error and Wesley Jones double while Miller homered for Trinidad to keep the difference three runs. Zach Leitten set the Osos down 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn the save.

The only errors in the game were from Trinidad, showing how much Raton has improved defensively since early in the season, and, Hancock said, "My hitting is about as good as anybodys, but I just cant keep giving up home runs and stuff like that. I cant defend against the home run."

Besides geting the win, Droddy described the game as "sort of a storybook night" for two of his players.

Fabrys family was in the stands, and he just missed hitting for the cycle, but still got on base four times with a walk, single, double and home run. Millers wife and little girl were there, and he came in to pinch hit in the seventh.

"I put him in to pinch hit, and he gets a hit and an RBI, so I left him in at second, and the next time he came up he hit a bomb," Droddy said. "He turned and waved at his little girl as he was coming in. It was a real sweet moment. One of the umpires said, "I got all goose-bumpy when he waved at that little girl."

It may not be another storybook night Sunday, but the two teams will face off again with Hancock hoping his pitching can hold up, and Droddy knowing his team can always come from behind.

ALAMOGORDO -- Taos took only its second loss as the home team this year, falling 10-8 to White Sands in the Aquarium Saturday. Because the Blizzard only have 14 home games, theyll play a number of road games as the home team, and despite the loss, Taos manager Matt Leahy wasnt upset.

"We did a great job," he said. "We did a great job. We pitched well. We hit well. We ran well. At the end of the day we put a lot of pressure on a lot of their players. We did what we wanted to do. Ultimately, the win wasnt there, but I think we set ourselves up for a pretty good series."

For Pupfish player/manager Ernie Munoz, it was "Another win. Another step in the right direction. The pitchers came out and threw strikes out of the bullpen. We hit the ball again, like we have been. I think were probably averaging 15 hits in the last 10 games. Played solid defense. Just had a couple of little errors that were just probably due to the field, actually."

The Blizzard took the early lead, going up 2-0 in the first when Ryan Sonberg was hit, Blair Springfield doubled and Calvin Culver singled both in.

The Fish tied the game in the second on a Mike Mendoza single and the first of two home runs by George Ban, then took a 5-2 lead in the third. Munoz and Mendoza each singled then Ban hit his second dinger of the night, getting three more RBI. White Sands stretched the lead to 7-2 in the fourth when Jerry Gonzales homered, then Christian Ramirez reached on an error and came home on a Collins single, passed ball and another Ban RBI, this time on a sac fly.

"He had about 12 RBIs," Munoz laughed about his right fielder.

The Pupfish got another two runs in the fifth on singles by Flores, Gonzales, Ramirez and a put out. But Taos wasnt ready to throw in the towel.

They made it 9-4 in the bottom of the stanza when John Apostolo walked and came in on a Kyle Richardson triple. Richardson then scored on a triple. The Blizzard pulled within one on a big sixth inning.

Culver homered, then Will Arnold and Brennan May both singled and came in on a 2-RBI double by Louis Gonzales. With Chad Hadzinsky in for Peacock on the mound, Richardson doubled to score Gonzales and the game was much closer.

That left it up to the relievers, and only Taos Sean Gregory allowed any runs, giving up two-out singles to Gonzales and Ramirez and an RBI single to Munoz. Nick Alexander, Justin Mauldin and Ernesto Zaragaza shut the Blizzard down the rest of the way.

"Thats what we need coming out of the bullpen," Munoz said. "We just ask that they throw strikes and give us a chance and theyre starting to do that. So everything is falling into place."

Richard Ruff came in in the eighth to keep it close for Taos.

"Hes our project," Leahy said. "He did very well for us. Without his effort, we wouldnt have been in a situation to possibly come back there. Ultimately, if there were a game ball, it would have gone to Ruff."

Starter Elliot VanCoaver took the loss with seven runs in 3.2 innings, with Steve Sanguliano giving up another two.

The game was the Blizzards first to southern New Mexico -- theyve played in Alpine -- and if they dont melt, Leahy doesnt mind the southern hospitality.

"Its too hot," he laughed. "Its good. Its a good setup. Theyve got a good team over here, but at the end of the day Ill put our team against any team in the world. Weve got the right guys. Its just a matter of putting them in the right situations. And today we did that. Tomorrows another day. Well come back and well beat them up again."

The entire series will be played with Taos the home team, and Munoz said its not too different.

"I dont think it changed much. It was just a little awkward, wearing grey pants. But it was OK. We changed. Weve been wearing those white pants for months. It was exciting to me," he said.

And the Pupfish will just keep on keeping on, even against the northern squads.

"As long as we play our game the way we can, Im not worried about it," he said. "Were clearly not going to look past anybody, but were just going to come out and play our game."

ALAMOGORDO -- A strong pitching performance by White Sands starter Justin Kuks combined with a rough start by Alpine starter Carlos Camacho led to a 7-3 Pupfish victory over the Cowboys Friday in the final game of the current series between the two teams.

"Justin Kuks came out and pitched his butt off and we played defense behind him and we put up another 14 hits like we have been doing and played baseball again," said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz.

"We put ourselves in a pretty big hole in the beginning and it was very hard to dig out of," said Alpine manager Ryan Stevens. "They had their ace on the mound. Kuks is their ace."

While Kuks was holding the Cowboys to three runs on five hits in seven innings, Camacho was hammered in the bottom of the first, all runs coming with two outs.

After the first two batters went down, Munoz Cody Collins and Mike Mondoza singled, Mendoza getting an RBI; Mark Leacox doubled in one; Jerry Gonzales singled in two; and Miguel Flores singled in one.

Josh Cruse came in in relief for Alpine in the second and basically shut White Sands down the rest of the way, giving up only one run in the sixth on a Flores double and J.J. Constantino triple in the sixth.

The Cowboys finally got to Kuks in the fourth, scoring when D.J. Johnson was hit and Cruse singled him in; then got their final two runs in the eighth. Alpine loaded the bases and scored two off a Joel Carranza single, but that inning was typical of the Cowboys Friday, as they couldnt get timely hits.

"We left way too many runners on base," Stevens said. "We probably left over 10 runners on base, I would assume (11, actually). We had bases loaded numerous times."

So while Alpine reliever Jeremy Burright gave u one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a Munoz ground rule double and Mendoza single, had even a few of those runners crossed the plate, the game would have been closer.

"Timely hitting was definitely not there, and Kuks threw a good game. He did, Stevens said.

"It was always going to be a good series with Alpine," Munoz said. "Theyre a good team, too. Good game all around and good game for us going into this next series."

That next series -- before the Pupfish finally head out on the road -- is at home vs. Taos beginning at 6:06 p.mn. Saturday. Its the first meeting between the two teams, and Munoz said he doesnt plan any changes.

"Were just going to keep playing our game. I dont know anything about them but well find out tomorrow."

ALAMOGORDO -- The only game played Wednesday in the Pecos League was a comedy of errors, with nine combined mistakes and neither manager very happy with his team when it was all over.

Still, Alpine got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 15-9 victory over the Pupfish at the Aquarium.

"We hit the ball a little bit. Did better with runners in scoring position. We had way too many friggin errors," said Alpine manager Ryan Stevens.

"We made a lot of errors and we had a lot of walks," echoes Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz. "It was a game we gave away. Its the same story, different day, lately."

Early on, it looked as though it would be another close game as starters Shane Youngdale and Eric Zagone kept the runs to a minimum.

The Cowboys went up 2-0 in the first when Derrick Fox and Logan Lotti walked, Joel Carranza singled in Fox the Mike Dobre hit an RBI double.

White Sands came back in the bottom of the stanza with a two-out single by Munoz, and error that put Cody Collins on base and a 2 RBI double by George Ban. The "Fish took a 3-2 lead in the second on another error and J.J. Costantino double.

The third and fourth were scoreless and mostly errorless, but Alpine went up 5-3 in the fifth when D.J. Johnson singled and scored on a Dobre single and error, the Brycen Bell hit a two-run home run.

The Pupfish tied it in the sixth when Collins doubled, Ban was hit and Mark Leacox singled to load the bases. An error brought in Collins and a putout scored Ban.

Despite seven runs in the seventh, only two were earned, as both teams bobbled the ball equally.

Alpine scored four runs on two singles, two walks and a wild pitch and two errors, while White Sands scored three on three hits -- including doubles by Ban and Collins -- a walk, wild pitch and an error.

The Cowboys added another five in the eighth, with again, only one earned, on a walk and four singles.

The Pupfish added an earned run in the bottom of the stanza when Joey Friedman and Miguel Flores each walked, the Friedman came in on a Costantino single.

Alpine padded its lead by one in the ninth when Johnson doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a sac fly by Bell.

"It was very sloppy," Stevens said. "I was not impressed with my teams performance today. Its always tough, getting right off the van and playing, but still no excuse. Weve got to do a better job and with four or five sloppy errors that looked like crap. Were a far better team than we showed tonight."

Even though many of the runs came in on something other than hits, several players still had good nights. For Alpine, Dobre was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI; Fox 2-for-4 with three runs and 2 RBI; Bell 2-for-3 with three runs and RBIs; and Tyler Rost 2-for-5.

"We capitalized on their mistakes; they capitalized on our mistakes," Stevens said. "Weve got to do a better job as a whole and were still working to move forward. The one positive I thought we did is we did a better job of hitting with runners in scoring position than we have in the past. But were still a very young team. Hopefully were going to hit our stride at the right time and when we hit our stride were a very dangerous team. But we have not hit our stride yet."

For White Sands, Leacox was 2-for-4; Ban 2-for-4 with a run and 3 RBI; Collins 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI; and Costantino 2-for-5 with one run and 2 RBI.

"We beat ourselves again and we gave the game away," Munoz said, explaining theres little time to fix the mistakes. "Weve got to come out tomorrow and do our best, I guess. Unfortunately, we dont have days to practice so well have to roll with the games and go with the lineup thats out there and see what happens."

The teams will be in action Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Aquarium.

ALAMOGORDO -- Raton manager Ray Hancock is happy as the Osos head home after four days in Alamogordo. Monday, Raton earned a split in the series with a 9-8, 10-inning victory over the Pupfish.

"Extra innings and the whole nine yards. Even had to use a couple of my position players to pitch," Hancock said. "But we got it done. We played from first strike to last outs. They were up on us there for a couple of innings but we came back. Scratched and kicked and everything else, but the players came through. Theyre definitely turning into a team."

White Sands did lead early, going up 1-0 in the first when J.J. Costantino singled and came home on a Cody Collins double.

Both teams scored one run in the second. Brandon Cruz and Louie Saenz singled for the Osos, with Cruz coming home on a fielders choice.

The "Fish made it 2-1 on singles by Jerry Gonzalez and Mark Leacox, a hit batter and a fielders choice.

Raton made it 2-2 in the third when Stedman Smith doubled, advanced on a put out and came home on a sac fly by Michael Lange. But that was all the scoring for the Osos until late, with the Pupfish slowly stretching the lead.

White Sands made it 4-2 in the fourth when, with two outs and a runner on first, Hancock pulled starter John Costa, putting right fielder Westly Jones on the mound.

"I just needed to get an out without going into my bullpen," the manager said.

Jones, who had pitched in college, promptly threw a hanger that Christian Ramirez sent out of the park.

"But the good thing was, the players never gave up," Hancock said.

Jared Rolan gave up another two Pupfish runs in the fifth when George Ban tripled and came home on a Gonzales single, and Gonzales scored on a Leacox single, stolen base and put out. They made it 7-2 in the sixth off Brian Hicks, who gave up singles to Ramirez and Ernie Munoz, then wild-pitched Ramirez home.

Raton had a big inning in the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits. With starter Chris Peacock still on the mound, Vincent Smarvelli and Smith both singled, then, with two outs, Lange hit a 3 RBI home run -- his seventh of the season -- and Cruz followed that shot with a solo dinger.

Miguel Flores made it 8-6 in the bottom of the inning with an RBI triple, but the Osos added a lone run in the eight and ninth, tying it, and in the 10th to get the victory.

Smarvelli got the RBI in the eighth, doubling in Travis Fuquay, who reached on an error; Jones reached on a White Sands error in the ninth, scoring when he stole home after advancing on out; then Brian Gregory scored the winning run after walking, advancing on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly, and scoring on a Smarvelli sac fly.

After shortstop A.J. Doyle pitched 1.2 innings, holding the Pupfish scoreless, Richard Suniga came in to close.

"Richie just shut the door on them," Hancock said. "So were very happy and we get to go home with a split from White Sands, which thats a really good thing. I think once we start playing the northern teams, theres a really good chance well start doing well."

"We gave another game away, just like weve been doing for the past couple of weeks," said disappointed sounding White Sands manager Munoz. "We made a couple of errors. Had a couple of passed balls. Wild pitches. We didnt play good baseball today. We got lackadaisical. I dont know. We tend to overlook teams, and Ratons not a bad team. If you overlook them, theyll beat you. They have some guys who can hit. They have a couple of arms out there. They didnt make it easy tonight. They played better than we did and they won."

And while the four White Sands pitchers kept the Osos hits down -- they only had 11 -- Hancock was pleased with how his team took advantage of Pupfish mistakes.

"Absolutely. And were not a team thats able to do that very often, so when someone gives us a mistake, we have to take advantage," he said.

The Osos now head home to face Santa Fe -- the other team theyve split with this season -- for a two game series at 6 p.m. each night. White Sands gets its third go at Alpine starting Wednesday -- the "Fish have an off day Tuesday -- and Munoz is hoping theyll play more like the last time the teams met, but cant say.

"I dont know whats going to happen with that series," he said. "Id like to say well take all four and thatd be ideal. If we play like we did today, Id be surprised if we win one game from the series."

One big inning the difference in White Sands victory

ALAMOGORDO -- A good start and strong six-inning pitching performance didnt result in Ratons sixth win of the season, but despite falling 9-3 to White Sands Sunday, Raton manager Ray Hancock wasnt too disappointed with the loss.

"Bottom line is, we got beat tonight," he said. "We actually played baseball. They played baseball. We were just outclassed on pitching."

Plus, said Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz, "We hit the ball well. Good defense."

Pupfish starter Justin Kuks gave up two Oso runs in the first on two walks and a costly error, which, combined with Will Casey shutting down White Sands early, made it look as though the home team might lose two in a row.

But Kuks got stronger as the game went on, and in the third, the "Fish cut the lead in half when Casey walked J.J. Costantino and Munoz tripled.

Raton got its last run off Kuks in the fifth when Brian Gregory walked, Westly Jones doubled and Michael Lange plated Gregory. But Casey couldnt get an out in the sixth, and White Sands took advantage of that.

Munoz opened the stanza with his first home run of the season -- "I was seeing the ball well today. I felt comfortable, finally," he said -- then Cody Collins singled, George Ban walked and Mike Medoza reached on an error that scored Collins. A Mark Leacox double brought in two, then, with Steve Taft on the mound, Kuks helped his own cause with an RBI triple and Costantino doubled in a run.

"Just that one inning in the sixth that they got a little bit on us and we just couldnt recover because they left that pitcher in there," Hancock said. "I have nothing but good things to say about him. He did his job and he deserved to win."

Kuks left after seven up 7-3, with Ernesto Zaragaza wrapping up for White Sands. The "Fisg scored two final runs in the eighth off Brian Hicks on singled by Zaragaza and Costantino and a Jerry Gonzalez 2 RBI double.

Hancock gave all the credit to Kuks, who allowed only four hits while striking out 11.

"Normally, we have 15-20 hits," the manager said. "Tonight we only had six, but even six is low compared to what we normally have. We were swinging the bat. He got to us. Everything he threw was working. All I can say is he did a hell of a job and I congratulate him for it."

The biggest plus for Raton was a second night with only one fielding error, and the Pupfish matched that statistic.

"It was a lot better than the first two games," Munoz said. "The first two games were kind of like a circus out there. We played a baseball game, finally."

The teams wrap up the four-game series with a 6:05 p.m. start Monday.

ALAMOGORDO -- There were a lot of hits and runs in Saturday;s game at the Aquarium in Alamogordo Saturday, and Raton was the beneficiary of more of those than White Sands, giving the Osos a 19-14 victory.

"Things are going my way again for a minute," said Raton manager Ray Hancock. "Our starting pitching did well, which kept us in the game. Like I told you before, I think Ive got a team here."

Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz sounded less-than-pleased with the outcome.

"They came out and put up 23 hits on us," he said. "Youre not going to win the game when you give up 23 hits. I think we only made a couple of errors. We scored 14 runs. It was a ridiculous game. We didnt play to the best of our ability, and giving up 23 hits is not going to win a lot of games. Well let today pass and well just come out tomorrow and pretend today didnt happen."

The Osos used those hits -- there were actually 24 -- to come out big early, and while the "Fish had two big innings, for the most part, the Raton pitchers shut them down.

The Osos made it 3-0 after one on two doubles (by Stedman Smith and Westly Jones), three singles and a walk. The Pupfish made it 3-2 on three straight singles and the only Oso error of the game, but Raton starter Cameron Powers shut White Sands down for the next two innings. Meanwhile, Raton added four runs in the fourth (on four singles, two hit batters ands a walk) and five in the third.

A Smith triple and doubles by Michael Lange and A.J. Doyle contributed to the dmage, as did a walk and error.

After Raton made it 13-1 in the fourth, White Sands came back with its biggest inning of the game. The "Fish put up seven runs on six hits, with Chris DeBiasi, Andrew Parrish, Brett Mendoza and Mike Mendoza each doubling.

The inning drove Powers from the mound, with Tim Sylvester coming in in relief. He gave up one of those doubles but got all the outs in the inning and kept the fifth scoreless.

Both sides scored big in the sixth.

Raton put up six runs on six hits and yet another Pupfish error (Westly Jones tripled and Zach Kreegar doubled), while Syulvester walked the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the inning, then gave up a 2 RBI single to George Ban before heading to the showers.

Brian Del Rosso was a bit wild, giving up three more Pupfish runs on a single, a hit batter, a walk and wild pitch, but he settled down in the final three innings to keep White Sands scoreless the rest of the way.

Three Pupfish pitchers -- Chris Anklam, Justin Mauldin and Nick Alexander did the same to the Osos, and after almost four hours, the game mercifully ended.

"Both sides put up a bunch of donuts, and that kept both sides in the game because of it," Hancock said, crediting White Sands with their comeback.

"They came back. They didnt let us go. Ive got to give them credit. They played to the very end too."

Lots of Raton hitter added to their batting averages Saturday. Lange was 5-for-7 with four runs and 5 RBI; Smith 4-for-7 with four runs; Kreegar and Powers both 2-for-3, Kreegar with two riuns and RBI; Powers 1 RBI; Nicholas Hinojo 3-for-6 with two runs and 3 RBI; Doyle 2-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBI; and Jones 2-for-5 with two runs.

"All I can say is everybody hit well tonight," Hancock said.

Only the top of the Pupfish lineup had multiple hits. Ramirez was 2-for-4 with three runs and 2 RBI; Ban 2-for-4, one run, 3 RBI; Mike Mendoza 2-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBI; and DeBiasi 2-for-3, one run and RBI.

"We tried to take today to give some guys some rest, and took some guys who are usually in the lineup out, but we still should have been able to come away with a win," Munoz said. "We didnt have any fire. There was no excitement about the game. Theres just no energy. I had a talk with the guys after the game and tomorrows going to be a new day."

Both coaches feel good about their pitching staffs despite the long game. Raton only used three hurlers, and while White Sands went through seven, Munoz isnt worried."

"Once the game got out of hand, we tried to get everyone in and our pitchers are fine," he said. "We still have a lot of depth with our pitching."

The teams wrap up the series Sunday with a 4 p.m. game in Alamogordo.

The White Sands Pupfish are enterin

The White Sands Pupfish are entering their third year of play in the Pecos League and many players, coaches and fans clearly see that the Pupfish have one of the best playing surfaces in the Pecos League. The City of Alamogordo has converted Griggs Park #8 into a great surface and a place opposing teams want to play. The City of Alamogordo has installed a clubhouse, warning track and misting stations for the spectators. The extreme heat of the White Sands Desert is neutralized by the league"s best bar with the most selections of liquor, beer and margaritas. Every day of the week they have a beer special of some sort.

Raton Manager Ray Hancock says "Alamogordo has the best setup of any city I have been to."

Netting went up behind home plate to improve visibilty for spectators. The Pupfish feature the league"s best scoreboard and the only Stalker Radar Gun for every pitch. The site of the ballpark directly in the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains has always been beautiful backdrop. The outfield and infield are among the smoothest in the entire league with best hops. The mound is favorite of Pupfish pitchers and visiting pitchers.

The following are drinks offered

  • Mike Hard Lemonade
  • Coors Light
  • Bud Light
  • Corona
  • Fishbowls-frozen comso with nerds.

ALAMOGORDO -- One day after handing the top team in the Pecos League only their third loss, Raton was pounded 18-6 Friday by upwardly mobile White Sands, a team thats been improving almost daily since manager Ernie Munoz arrived in town.

Since Munoz joined the team from his job as an assistant softball coach at U.C. Berkeley, the Pupfish handed the Invaders their first loss of the season; went 2-and-2 vs. Trinidad then 3-and-1 against Alpine. Its not hard to see Munoz has made a difference.

"I know they were struggling before I got here," the player-manager said. "I think it was just a lack of leadership. Not that we didnt have any, there was just nobody holding the reins. You need somebody in this position with experience, and in the last couple of years, Ive been that guy for teams Ive been on, and there was nobody here whos been in that position before."

Friday, whether at first base or managing at third, Munoz again led his team to a win.

"We know what were going to do: were going to swing the bat and score a lot of runs. The defense was fine and our pitchers threw a lot of strikes. Everything was fine."

The Ososo actually led briefly, going up 1-0 in the top of the first on a Travis Fuquay double and Zach Kreegar single. But White Sands came back with three in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

"Looked very ugly today," said Raton manager Ray Hancock. "Pitching was actually pretty good. The starting pitching was fairly good. We just couldnt make simple plays behind him. Had three little popups that anybody should have been able to catch and couldnt do it. Basically just did not play baseball. Thats the bottom lime."

The runs in the first came after two walks and a Mike Mendoza home run. All four runs in the second were unearned after an early error followed by two outs then back-to-back doubles by Cody Collins and Mendoza and a Jerry Gonzales single.

Fuquay again scored for the Osos in the third, walking the comping home on singles by Matt Lynch and Kreegar, but the Pupfish put up four more runs in the bootom of the stanza on another set of doubles (Erik Zagone and J.J. Costantino) -- and singles (Collins and Mendoza.)

"Once they got on base they stole on us and got a hit here and there and before you know it were down 10 runs," Hancock said.

The fourth, fifth and sixth were scoreless, then Raton closed a bit with a trio of runs in the seventh off a Lynch home run.

But another costly error in the seventh let White Sands put up seven unearned runs and that, Hancock said, is unacceptable.

"Its time I have to make some decisions," he said. "Im going to make some decisions and chips have to fall where they may. Ive not got much choice in the matter now."

Of the 18 runs the Pupfish scored, only seven were earned, maning it should have been a much closer ball game. Munoz got multiple hits from most of his starters -- Mendoza was 5-for-6 with 6 RBI and five runs scored -- and both Fuquay and Kreegar were 3-for-4 for the Osos, but Hancock said a lot of their hits were going right at Pupfish.

The teams meet again Saturday, and while Munoz is going to make some changes just to give players a break -- "Were changing it up tomorrow. Giving a some guys a few days off in the next couple of days. Were strong, all 26 of us. I dont doubt anybody I put on the field," he said -- Hancock may be making some more serious moves.

"Hopefully itll be a better outcome tomorrow," he said.

ALAMOGORDO -- After losing four out of five to Alpine in the seasons first series, White Sands turned things around the second time the two teams met. The Pupfish took two out of three from the Cowboys, wrapping up with a 14-9 victory.

"We came out and hit the ball again today and scored a lot of runs and got to get our reserves in and get them some at bats and playing time," said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. "It was a lot of fun. Everybody got to put a little bit of effort into todays win."

With starter Chris Peacock on the mound on the regulars in the field, the "Fish shut the Cowboys down through five, allowing no runs on only three hits. Meanwhile, the White Sands bats pounded the Alpine pitching.

The Pupfish went up 4-0 in the bottom of the first on four hits -- including a double by Christian Ramirez -- and an error. They added a fifth run in the second when J.J. Costantino singled and came home on a Ramirez single, walk and wild pitch, and another five in the third.

Cowboy starter Mike Castrignano couldnt get an out in the third inning, but reliever Jeremy Burright didnt do much better.

Castrignano hit a batter and gave up two singles, scoing two, and while Burright got the first out on a fielders choice, a Ramirez double and error brought three more Pupfish home. Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth, and Alpine finally broke through against Peacock in the sixth.

Derrick Fox and Tyler Rost both singled, Eric Herman walked; then an error scored Fox and Rost came home on a D.J. Johnson single.

Munoz started bringing in his subs in the seventh -- DJ Stinsman came in to pitch and pinch hitters came in then stayed in the field -- but White Sands continued to score, getting three more runs off Brian Milliman on three hits -- a Costantino double led the way -- a walk and a hit batter.

Alpine tallied three runs off four hits in the eighth, while the Pupfish added another run in the bottom of the stanza.

The Cowboys made things interesting in the ninth when Rost walked, Casanova Donaldson singled and Rost came home on an error.

Then, with two out and John Saavedra on the mound, Chris Torrance singled; Kenshoku Takubo walked; Conor Thompson reached on an error and Matt Mara singled, adding another four runs for the visitors. But after Fox singled, Thompson was caught off base and the game -- and series -- belonged to White Sands.

"I feel great," Munoz said of the win. "Its nothing we didnt expect. We came into the season expecting to win a championship, and thats the way were going to carry ourselves."

Both sides had some solid hitting. Ramirez was 4-for-4 with three runs; Costantino 3-for-5 with three runs; and Cody Collins and Jerry Gonzalez each 2-for-5.

The Cowboys had as many hits as the Pupfish -- 15 -- but simply couldnt make them count. Chris Torrance was 2-for-2 with two runs and RBI; Rost was 3-for-4 with two runs; Donaldson 2-for-5 with one run; and Fox 2-for-six with a run.

After a rough road trip, Alpine is probably happy to head home, where the Cowboys will face the 14-3 Invaders. Fridays game is set for a 7:05 (CDT) start. White Sands welcomes fresh-off-a-victory Raton, but Munoz said it doesnt matter who the Pupfish face. They have the same plan every day.

"We do what weve been doing," he said. "We just come out. Swing the bats early and play solid defense. It doesnt matter who we play. We dont really play against the other team. We just play ourselves every day."

ALAMOGORDO -- It was yet another down-to-the-wire match between Alpine and White Sands Wednesday, with the Cowboys squandering a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the bottom of the ninth to give the Pupfish an 8-7 victory.

"Were playing one of the better teams in the league, so Alpine and us, I think its going to be a battle every day," said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. "Its been a one-run game this whole series, so were just playing good baseball right now and were going to keep rolling with it."

For the most part, it was the starters who had a rough time as most of the runs came early in the game.

Alpine went up 4-0 after half an inning off Jason Kuks. Derrick Fox, Eric Herman and Casanova Donaldson all singled, then, two outs later, D.J. Johnson walked and Brycen Bell hit a 2-RBI single. Billy Crowe followed that with yet another single, and Alpine had what looked like a solid lead.

But, Munoz said, those hits were nothing to write home about.

"It was a bleeder here and a duck-walk here. They werent solid hits. There were about seven bloop singles today, just hitting them where our guys werent."

And White Sands came back in the bottom of the stanza, scoring three off Gilbert Barrera.

J.J. Collins, Ernie Munoz and Cody Collins all singled, scoring Collins, then, with two outs, Mark Leacox doubled to make it 4-3 Alpine. Then, while the Cowboys shut down for the next two innings, the "Fish continued adding runs.

In the second, J.J. Costantino singled, Christian Ramirez walked and Munoz and Collins singled to make it 5-4. White Sands added a solo run in the third when Leacox doubled and Jerry Gonzales singled, but the Cowboys again battled back in the fourth.

Fox was hit and came home on a wild pitch and error that put Donaldson on first. Then, with two outs, Joel Carranza doubled him in, tying the game at 6-6.

The fifth saw the Pupfish again go on top when Leacox singled and Kuks doubled him in, then, after a scoreless sixth and seventh, both teams scored in the eighth.

Fox walked, stole second and came home on a Herman single that tied the game at 7-7, but White Sands took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when J.J. Costantino walked, advanced on two fly balls and scored on a wild pitch.

That set up the ninth.

Nick Alexander gave up a single to Logan Lotti, then Carranza reached on an error. The firsrt out advanced both runners, then Alexander hit Mike Dobre, loading the bases. But Alexander struck out the two pinch hitters that came to bat, ending the game with a one-run victory.

"He has ice in his veins," Munoz said when asked why he didnt pull Alexander. "He doesnt feel the pressure in that situation. So we didnt doubt him the whole time. We were comfortable with it and we came out on top."

As far as offense, both teams had 14 hits and three walks, including a pair of doubles.

"We have a strong offense," Munoz said. "Weve known that from the get-go. It was just our bullpen, it was a matter if were were going to turn that around. I think we made a couple of errors here and there in the past three games, but errors are down. The defense is looking up and weve made a few changes to our bullpen and were ready to go now."

That includes trying to take three out of four from the Cowboys in Thursdays closer.

"Were going to come out," Munoz said. "Thats what were looking to do so well take it game by game and well see how tomorrow goes."

ALAMOGORDO -- White Sands started and finished strong at home Tuesday, but the middle innings belonged to Alpine, giving the Cowboys an 8-7 victory at the Aquarium.

"Yeah, we held on," said Cowboy manager Ryan Stevens. "We finally woke up. We were asleep at the wheel early on and finally decided to wake up and play a little baseball. I dont think we played particularly well, but we did wake up and put a couple of runs on the board and it was enough for us to win."

The Pupfish put one on board in the first when J.J. Costantino scored on a Cody Collins double, and one in the second when Chris DeBiasi reached on an error then came around on singles by Matt Gibbs and Costantino.

Alpine got its first run in the third on singles by Brycen Bell, Derrick Fox and Casanova Donaldson, but White Sands came back with two in the bottom of the stanza.

Cody Collins reached on a fielders choice, then scored on a single by George Ban and RBI double by DeBiasi. Ban came home on a groundout, making it 4-1.

But the Cowboys closed the gap on a two-run home run by D.J. Johnson after a Logan Lotti single, and while a single by Costantino and RBI double by Munoz made it 5-3, that was all the scoring the "Fish would get until the ninth. Meanwhile, Alpine kept scoring.

"We actually got to their starter," Stevens said. "He kept us off balance for a good portion of the game with his cutter. We were chasing stuff in the dirt. Finally I think he started to get a little tired. I think somewhere between 60 and 80 pitches he started to get a little tired and thats when we hit a couple of big shots off of him."

The Cowboys put up two in the sixth when Lotti homered, scoring Donaldson; two in the seventh when Brycen Bell singled, Derrick Fox walked and Donaldson doubled them in; and a final run -- which would be the difference -- in the ninth.

Michael Willis and Brandon Kuter allowed the late-inning runs and that, said Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz, has been the teams downfall.

"It was our middle relief, like its been all year. I dont want to put it all on them, because it is a team sport and we need to get help from other areas but our bullpen definitely has to get better and come in and throw strikes. When they do, we usually come out on top. When they dont, we end up like tonight."

Fox doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Lotti single to take an 8-5 lead. But the Pupfish werent ready to surrender.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Ban singled and scored on a Ban home run. Mark Leacox and Jerry Gonzales both singled, putting runners on base, but Alpine closer Scott Hartline bore down, getting a strikeout and fly ball to preserve the victory with a save.

"Their closer, he came in and I thought we hit him well," Munoz said. "We scored two runs off him and we were a couple of feet from tying the game up. J.J. Costantino line out to left with two outs but hit the ball hard."

Shane Youngdale got the Cowboy win, going seven, with White Sands reliever Michael Willis getting the loss.

"Youngdale struggled early on, but he settled down his last four innings," Stevens said. "He got us to the bullpen in the seventh and our bullpen was solid tonight. Scott had a little rough edge, but hes gotta go through his lumps. This is his first year as a closer and hes evolving and getting better as hes going through adversity and adapting to getting hit around a little."

Offensively, Fox was 3-for-4 with two runs; Johnson 2-for-3 with 1 run and 2 RBI; Bell 2-for-4 with two runs; and Donaldson and Lotti both 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. Donaldson scored one run; Lotti two.

Costantino was 3-for-5 for the "Fish with two runs and an RBI; Ramirez, Ban and DeBiasi 2-for-4; and Munoz and Leacoz 2-for-5.

Once again, the plus for the Pupfish was their never-say-die attitude.

"Like weve been doing the last week or so, we have a lot of fight in us," Munoz said. "Were not going to give up. Its just a matter of staying ahead when we get ahead. We continue to let the better teams stay in the game with us and we should shut them down."

The teams will meet again Wednesday and Thursday -- both games at 6 p.m. in the Aquarium -- which will be the eighth and ninth meetings of the season.

"That only gets harder," Munoz said. "The more the pitchers, for any team, in any league, the more the pitchers see hitter, they have a step up on them. THey know their weaknesses and it just gets harder to hit."

Zagone- Weidman face off in Aquarium battle

ALAMOGORDO -- After several nights of mostly-close high-scoring games, the fans at the Aquarium were treated to something a bit different Memorial Day: an old-fashioned pitchers duel.

Starters Eric Zagone (White Sands) and Bryce Weidman (Alpine) faced off through six innings, with the score a mere 3-1 Pupfish when Weidman left the mound. Five more pitchers wrapped up the day, but in the end, the Cowboys couldnt get enough runs across, falling to the "Fish 4-3.

"It was a very good game," said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. "Its the best baseball Ive seen since Ive been here. I think the only error in the game was a play where our shortstop threw it to our first baseman and the ball went through his glove. Our first basemans glove broke. The ball went through it and they called it an error, I guess. Other than that, all the plays were made on both sides. There was no chatter going back and forth. We just played real good baseball. Fun."

And they played close baseball, with neither team able to put up more than one run in any inning.

White Sands drew first blood when, in the bottom of the first, Jerry Gonzales singled, stole second and came home on a put out. Alpine tied the game in the second when Logan Lotti walked, advanced to second on another walk and third on a fielders choice then scored on a Billy Crowe double.

After that one sort-of error in the top of the fourth -- which didnt result in any runs -- Cody Collins walked in the bottom of the stanza; Andrew Parrish singled; Mark Leacox reached on an error to load the bases then Joey Friedman made it 2-1 Pupfish.

White Sands got its third run in the fifth when Gonzales singled, stole second and came home on a single by George Ban.

After a scoreless sixth, both sides put up a run in the seventh to make it 4-2.

Dustin Sandberg homered for Alpine, and Christian Ramirez singled and came home on a Collins double for the Pupfish. That winning run was given up by reliever Josh Cruse, who couldnt get any outs in the stanza, but Derrick Mitchell came in to close down both the seventh and eighth.

The Cowboys put up one more run in the eighth when three batters, led by Casanova Donaldson, walked off relievers D.J. Stinsman and Chad Hadzinsky. Joel Carranza flew out to center, scoring Donalson, but the other runners were stranded as Hadzinsky got the third out of the inning, then only faced four batters in the ninth to get thewin.

"Bryce didnt have his best stuff but he still competed and gave us a chance to win," said Alpine manager Ryan Stevens. "We made a costly error. We struggled out of some jams. We left runners on."

And more than that, Stevens said, his team only found out at 10:30 p.m. Sunday that Mondays game would be a 1 p.m. start.

"We had a two hour trip here this morning," the manager said. "I dont know what to say. I"m not going to make excuses. My guys were dragging ass today."

Munoz said that early start might have been a plus for his squad.

"For us, Eric Zagone came in and he just threw a lot of strikes (7). So we were able to get a lot of balls put in play and our defense made all the plays and everything seemed pretty easy," he said. "I dont know if it was because it was early on in the day. The guys werent as tired. I dont know. But both teams pitchers threw very well."

Hits were few and far between for both sides, as White Sands only allowed six and Alpine nine, but Collins was 2-for-3 for the "Fish with one run and RBI; Ban was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI; and Gonzales 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Crowe was the only Cowboy with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

The teams will meet again Tuesday, with game time set for 6 p.m.

ALAMOGORDO -- It was another thriller for the fans at the Aquarium Sunday, as the Pupfish and Triggers again battled right down to the wire, with the Triggers taking an 11-10 ninth-inning victory over the home team.

And, just like Saturday, Sunday saw a pitcher hit a home run. This time, it was Trigger Benji Waite, who came in to pitch with one out in the seventh and gave up one run in the eighth.

But trailing 10-9 in the top of ninth, Waite hit a one-out blast to tie then game, then, with two outs, Jacob Fabry homered for the win.

"It was another night for pitchers, but we did have the two home runs on the night, one by our closer and one by our captain," said Trinidad manager J.D. Droddy. "It was a fun game."

Maybe not so much early, as White Sands jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, scoring when J.J. Costantino walked, Jerry Gonzales and Ernie Munoz both singled and Cody Collins doubled. The home team made it 5-0 in the third when Munoz doubled and scored on a George Ban single.

That lead held until the fifth, when Trinidad finally got on board.

Bryce Miller walked then, with two outs, Fabry, Sam DiMatteo and Frank Florio all singled, with Mike Goldy hitting a 3 RBI double to cut the Pupfish lead to 5-4.

White Sands came back in the bottom of the stanza when Munoz walked, Collins was hit and Mendoza doubled them in. Mendoza made it 8-4 when he scored on a Ban sacrifice.

Grant Ledbetter left the mound after six -- "He wasnt throwing his best game but he gutted it out. Got six innings for us," Droddy said -- but he wrapped up his time on the mound with a scoreless inning.

In the seventh, Trinidad put two runs on the board with a Fabry single, a hit batter, two walks and a put out. One more out and Miller singled to make it 8-7. But the "Fish gave themselves a cushion, scoring when reliever Jason McCurry walked and and allowed a Chris DeBiasi single. Waite then came on and struck out Joey Friedman but a wild pitch plated Ban.

The Triggers went up in the top of the eighth on singles by Fabry, DiMatteo and Goldy, and an RBI double by Wink Nolan, but the Pupfish again came back, going up 10-9 when Costantino singled, Munoz was intentionally walked and Collins hit an RBI single.

That set up the ninth-inning fireworks that ended with the Trigger come-from-behind win.

"We like to score early and often and this time we scored often late," Droddy laughed, noting that the events of the last few nights make the decision to go to National League rules look like a wise one.

"The pitchers are hitting. They let the pitchers hit this year and theyre taking advantage of it," he said.

Ledbetter was 2-for-3 for Trinidad with a double and a run scored, while Waite had the home run, giving him ones across the board.

Both teams hit well, with Fabry 4-for-4 with four runs and an RBI; DiMatteo 3-for-5 with three runs; Goldy 3-for-5 with 5b RBI; and Nolan 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. On the other side, manager/catcher Munoz was 2-for-2with three runs and 2 RBI; Gonzales was 3-for-4 with two runs; Collins 2-for-4 with one run and 3 RBI; and Costantino 2-for-4 with two runs.

Winning in front of a small crowd of Trigger fans as well as Pupfish, Droddy said, "It was a big victory, so we split the series with them."

And, going by the baseball adage, "win at home, split on the road," the manager was pleased.

"Absolutely," he said. "We were hoping to win three, but that didnt happen, and today we had to win to get the split and we did what we had to do."

Trinidad now heads home where theyll face Santa Fe for the first time this year in a four-game, home and home series.

The Pupfish will again host Alpine, with the big difference the presence of Munoz, who wasnt yet on board during the first series.

ALAMOGORDO -- For the third night in a row, it was a down-to-the-wire game at the Aquarium in Alamogordo. Friday, the Pupfish edged Trinidad 9-7 after the Triggers came back from a 9-3 deficit in the ninth with a grand slam home run by Sam DiMatteo, but Nate Alexander bore down to get the final outs.

Pupfish manager Ernie Munoz said he wasnt concerned as the Triggers closedvthe gap.

"I wasnt worried the whole time," he said. "We had our closer (Alexander) in with a huge lead, something hes not used to, so his job is when were in a closer game. Two or three runs. So once that home run happened I think he got more comfortable."

For most of the game the scoring was on the White Sands side of the scoreboard, and Trigger manager J.D. Droddy had kind words for the winners.

"It was a very exciting ballgame in Alamogordo tonight. We came up on the short end but I thought we played pretty well," he said. "White Sands played well. They made some excellent plays. (J.J.) Constantino in center field made a fantastic diving catch that cost us maybe one or two runs. Their starting pitcher, (Matt) Gibbs), did an excellent job. One of my players called him "a crafty pitcher. I agree with that. He doesnt have overpowering stuff but he did a great job. I congratulate White Sands on a hard-won victory and the fans really enjoyed it."

Neither side scored in the first, but after Joey Friedman tripled in the second, he was thrown out on a fielders choice by Jerry Gonzalez, then Gonzales came around on a walk and error.

Trinidad went up 3-1 in the third. Dylan Porter reached on a fielders choice and scored on a Matt Hunt single and Jacob Fabry double. Mike Goldy then doubled Hunt and Fabry in.

But the Pupfish came back in the bottom of the stanza, scoring when Christian Ramirez singled, went to second on an error and came home on a single by George Ban. Cody Collins then walked, Chris DeBiasi was hit, and Ban came in on an out. Gonzales then singled in Collins to make it 4-3, and from then until the ninth, all the scoring came from the "Fish.

The fourth looked a lot like the fifth from the White Sands perspective.

Constantino and Ramirez singled, then, after Ban hit into a fielders choice, Constantino scored on a Collins single; Ban scored on a single by Andrew Parrish; and Collins and Parrish scored on a 2 RBI single by DeBiasi.

In the fifth, Gonzales singled, advanced on two outs and scored on a passed ball, then things quieted down until the top of the ninth.

Will Leonard and Andrew Azzopardi singled and Richie Serritella was hit to load the bases. That set up DiMatteos heroics, and, on an 0-1 count, he blasted a shot out the park.

But Alexander, who came in in relief in the top of the inning, struck out Hunt; got Fabry to ground out and, after walking Goldy, struck out big Trigger hitter Florio to end the inning and game.

Munoz, who just managed Friday, sounds happy with what hes seeingf.

"Were playing well," he said. "Our starters did well today. Matt threw a great game today. I think he went seven. He had six strikeouts. Didnt give up too many hits (six). George Ban, our left fielder, he had a few hits in there (3-for-5, two runs, 1 RBI) and a huge defensive play in the outfield. We had a talk last night after the game, and I think the wheels are going to start rolling here."

And, after several days with numerous errors, the Pupfish only had two.

"I was really happy with our defense. That was part of the conversation we had with the team last night. We just have to start making the routine plays, and we did that to the best of our ability tonight."

The teams will be back at it Saturday with a 6 p.m. start at the Aquarium.

"It was a good ball game and well come back tomorrow expecting to take the lead in the series," Droddy said. "We always expect to win and tomorrows no different. Weve got a great team. Theres no quit in them. I love my guys. They play hard. Weve got a lot of talent and were coming back to play hard again and hope maybe the White Sands fans will turn out and get their moneys worth. They certainly got their moneys worth tonight."

ALAMOGORDO -- White Sands almost pulled off an amazing comeback for the second day in a row.

Almost.

Down 10-2 in the bottom of the ninth at home against Trinidad, the Pupfish put up five runs on a walk, fielders choice, single and two home runs, then loaded the bases with two outs before player/manager Ernie Munoz struck out for the final out.

Oh so close.

"I did have a strikeout to end the game. Came up in the big situation and wasnt able to capitalize. But thats baseball," Munoz said.

For the Triggers, it was a big on-the-road win after two losses at home, and manager J.D. Droddy blamed the late-inning Pupfish comeback on his pitching.

"As Ive told you before, Im trying to find a bullpen," he said. "Its middle relief that weve got to find. Im very pleased with the starting pitching. Im very pleased with the closer. Weve just got to beef up middle relief."

The Triggers didnt have any huge innings, but scored in four different stanzas to take the big late lead, and Droddy also liked that.

"We hit early and often, which is the way we have been playing," he said. "We didnt play that way last night against Las Vegas, but even the first night when they beat us, we hit early and often. We got 17 hits."

Trinidad went up 2-0 in the first when Jacob Fabry singled and scored on the first of five White Sands errors.

Sam DiMatteo, who reached third on the error, came in on a Frank Florio single.

Starters Chris Tuttle (Trinidad) and Chris Anklam (White Sands) kept things scoreless through the next two innings, but the top of the fourth saw the Triggers biggest inning of the game.

After Florio singled, Mike Goldy homered to put them up 4-0. With one out, Andrew Azzopardi doubled, Miller reached on an error and, with two outs, Matt Hunt singled to make it 6-0.

White Sands got their first run in the bottom of the stanza when Munoz and Cody Collins singled, Mike Mendoza was hit to load the bases and George Ban hit a sac fly to center to score Munoz. Although Tutlle loaded the bases again, pinch hitter Erik Nockleby ground out for the third out.

The Triggers added another pair of runs in the fifth off reliever Michael Willis, who only gave up one hit -- a single by Richie Serritella -- but but walked one, had a wild pitch and was betrayed by another error.

The sixth and seventh were scoreless -- Tuttle went seven and John Saavedra came in for the "Fish -- but both teams scored in the eighth.

Miller walked and pinch hitter Alan Cheatham hit a "long bomb" for Trinidad to make it 8-1.

Josh Trejo came in for the Triggers, getting the first two runners out, but then Mendoza doubled and Ban hit an RBI single. In what would be a preview of the ninth, the Pupfish loaded the bases but couldnt bring anyone else in.

The White Sands hits in the final stanza came from Andrew Parrish, who singled, Cody Collins and George Ban, who homered, and Mark Leacox, Wednesday nights hero, who singled.

Droddy said Trejo, who just joined the tam from Alpine "pitched one good inning then he kind of fell apart. He gave up five runs before I could get him replaced, but it was all right."

James Coon came in briefly in the ninth, giving up one single, then Benji Waite came in.

"Who Im convinced is the best closer in the league and he just came down and shut them out, which is what he always does," Droddy said "I was nervous until I could get Benji in, then I dont get too nervous when Benji is in there. Ive got great confidence in Benji. Hes just a tremendous closer."

Wait did face four batters, but also got the final two outs, including the strikeout to Munoz.

For the manager, those errors were key.

"Again, its just the errors are killing us," he said. "But the positive thing we took from it is that this team shows it will fight back. And I think when it comes down to the end of the season, thats going to be very important as the games get closer and theres a lot of tight games in the playoffs and we know now that we dont give up. We just have to start with that same fire in the beginning of the game. We want to turn it on in the last couple of innings lately, where we should be turning it on after the first pitch."

Munoz blamed most of the mistakes on his younger players, who, he said, just need to put the errors behind them.

"Its mental mistakes is whats going on," he said. "We make one error and that leads to another error and another error and weve got to learn as a team to shut it down after the first error. Because were going to make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. And thats what we need to know."

The Pupfish and Triggers will go at it again Friday at 6 p.m., with the city opening its "Movie under the Stars" night on an inflatable screen on an adjoining diamond. The movie -- Shrek -- will begin around sunset, with youngsters -- and the young at heart -- able to go from the game to the movie and back again.

And then there were none. Pupfish hand Invaders first loss

ALAMOGORDO -- The Pupfish did something Wednesday no other team has been able to do this season: they beat Roswell 8-7 to had the Invaders their first loss of the season.

It did take 10 innings -- which made the loss a little easier to take -- but that also made the win sweeter.

"It feels great," said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. "The way we did it on the comeback win, its the best feeling in the world."

"Thats the way it goes," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "We just happened to get beat in the bottom of the last inning."

The win was topped off with a walk-off triple by Mark Leacox, but there was lots of excitement earlier.

The game was close and low-scoring early, with strong performances by both starting pitchers.

Eric Zagone went seven for the "Fish, giving up only four runs,

Matthew Faiman scored in the first when he reached on a fielders choice and scored on a single by Roger Bernal and Vincent Mejia double.

The Invaders got two more in the second on a Nate Theunissen single followed by an Andrew Deeds shot over the left-field fence. Roswell got one more run in the fourth when Deeds beat out a bunt single, advanced on a ground out and scored on a single by Chad Kruse, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

Alamogordo got one run off Invader starter David Mueller when J.J. Costantino was hit, advanced on a put out and scored on a George Ban single. Mueller kept the next four innings scoreless, but left in the fifth because of an injury.

"I really wish we could have used him another inning or two, but his arm was just hanging," Ebright said. "The way he battled with his arm sore. Hes a tough kid."

The Pupfish closed the gap to 4-3 in the sixth off A.J. Alexander, scoring on a Mike Mendoza single that dropped between the fielders in short center field and a Cody Collins home run. White Sands took a 5-4 lead in the seventh off Jacob Cook, who gave up an Andrew Parrish single; a long RBI single by Costantino; a Mendoza RBI single and a fielders choice and error.

And while the start of the game was error free, things started looking a little sloppy late.

Roswell tied the game in the eighth off Pupfish reliever John Saavedra.

Bernal singled, Mejia was hit then one out later, Theunissen advanced on catcher obstruction to load the bases. Deeds singled to deep left, but left fielder Mendoza singled a catch and Theunissen turned around, headed back to second and was caught off base.

That sparked a discussion between the managers and umpires but once thing settled down, Saavedra got the final out.

Jesus Carlos came in and set the Pupfish down 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth, and Nick Alexander did the same to Roswell in the ninth. But in the 10th, it appeared as though the Invaders would pull out another come from behind victory.

With one out, Mejia walked off Justin Kuks then McCarthy reached first on a fielders choice that saw Mejia safe at third. Theunissen reached on a second error, scoring Mejia, then a Deeds fielders choice and error scored McCarthy. Carlos then walked, but Erick Gaylord struck out, putting the lead at 7-5 and setting up the Pupfish heroics.

With Carlos still on the mound, Jerry Gonzales singled. Mendoza walked, Gonzales advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a George Ban single. WIth the small but very enthusiastic crowd cheering their favorites on, Collins got the first out of the inning then Leacox came to bat and on a 2-2 count, nailed a shit into center that brought home the winning runs.

"Its unbelievable. Very exciting," Leacox said of the win. Asked what he was thinking at the plate, "Just stay short, quick to the ball and hit it hard. Simple," he said.

How did he feel knowing how Carlos had pitched in the previous two innings?

"I had a lot of confidence. I was just looking for a good pitch in the zone to get a good swing on. Keep it simple. Challenge him."

And thats what he got.

"Absolutely. I was very happy with that. Very happy. Theyre a very good team. Im glad to get a win."

"We played strong," Munoz said. "Our errors were in the ninth inning. We played no-error baseball until the ninth inning then we let a few get away, but the best part about it is we didnt stop fighting and we came back and scored three in the bottom of the 10th."

Ebright didnt seem too concerned with the loss.

"We knew they could hit. We used up a lot of bullpen and I wasnt going to use up any more. Jesus did a great job," he said.

Roswell heads back to Joe Bauman Stadium Thursday for a matchup against Alpine, and Ebright said there wont be any changes.

"Were not going to do anything different. Weve got our starter, Jonathan Sa going tomorrow. Were going to just keep playing baseball."

White Sands will face Trinidad, but Munoz said he doesnt care who comes to town.

"We just want to play our own ball right now," he said. "Weve been playing against the other teams and beating ourselves. We just have to play our game the way we play."

ALAMOGORDO -- Going on the road couldnt stop the juggernaut that is the Roswell Invaders, as they topped White Sands 15-6 in the Aquarium Tuesday to up their win streak to eight games. But while the Pupfish lost, they had one thing to celebrate as manager Ernie Munoz finally joined the team, promising changes that he hopes will help the squad right itself.

"Ive been talking to the guys while I was gone, now Ive seen it first hand, so I know the changes that need to be made," he said. "I was going off what other guys were telling me, but its always better to see it with your own two eyes and now that Ive seen it, I think I know the changes I need to make and Ill make them."

Tuesday, the problem was too many errors, some shaky pitching and not enough timely hits. Roswell only used three pitchers -- starter Ryan Richardson and reliers Scott Elitzky and Eric Lambe -- and made their hits count.

"Richardson, Elitzky and Lambe. Three pitchers in one game. Thats great," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "They threw strikes. White Sands, they hit the ball pretty hard and right at a couple of our guys, so we got lucky in a sense in a couple of innings because another two inches higher and it would have been an RBI double. But still, thats the game of baseball. But our pitchers did very well tonight and our hitters got on base and we put pressure on some people."

The Invaders sent eight batters to the plate in the first, starting off when CHad Cruse reached on a two-base error. Pupfish starter Chris Peacock then got the next two batters batters, but Ryan Normoyles sac bunt scored Cruse, and the final out was hard to come by.

Vincent Mejia doubled into the net in left field, Charles DUbanski and Nate Theunissen walked and Andred Deeds hit a three-run double.

White Sands scored one in the bottom of the first when Monoz -- catching as well as managing -- singled and scored on singles by Mike Mendoza and Cody Collins.

Roswell made it 5-1 in the third on a solo home run by Mejia, then added two more in the fourth on two errors, with Cruse scoring on a passed ball Mejia bringing in Roger Bernal on a single

The Pupfish had their biggest inning in the bottom of the third.

Richardson walked George Ban, allowed a Chris DeBiasi single and Jerry Gonzales RBI double and a 2 RBI J.J. Constantino seeing-eye single, a shot that bounced off Richardsons glove and then right under the glove of the second baseman.

Neither team scored in the fifth but Roswell added another five runs in the sixth on five hits, a hit batter and an error and another three in the eighth on a ground-rule RBI double by Erick Gaylord and a ground out.

Reliever Andrew Parrish helped end the inning wneh a Normoyle shots bounced off his glove and he was still able to recover in time to throw it to first for the out.

The White Sands fans had a little bit to cheer about in the bottom of the eighth when Collins singled, Ryan Pembroke walked and Collins came in on an error. Two wild pitches later and Pembroke came in with the final Pupfish run.

Munoz, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored as a player, said as the manager, he knows what needs to be done to get the team back on track.

"I saw a lot of people who are injured on our team, who havent been telling me that," he said. "I didnt know the injuries that had occurred and I had guys out there playing hurt, so Ive got to take care of that and get some fresh legs in there. Our pitchers, they just need to pound the zone. They need to throw more strikes and they all know that. Were going to talk about that right now and hopefully going forward were going to fix that."

Ebright said while the fans may be talking about the Invader win streak, the players arent.

"Its just the way it goes. In a season like this, with so many games, you can win six, seven eight in a row then the next week lose five, six, seven in a row. Obviously were playing well. Confidence is great with these guys and well just keep taking it one day at a time."

ROSWELL -- For six innings Monday, Roswell and White Sands battled in a pitchers duel, with Pupfish Matt Gibbs and Invader Andrew Shoemaker keeping the other team off balance and off base. Even though Roswell won 7-4, Invader manager Chris Ebright had praise for both teams.

"That was a great ball game," he said. "Heck, we finished in 2-1/w hours. Gibbs, hes a great pitcher for them and for us, Shoemaker went seven scoreless. He did great."

There were only two runs through six innings, both by Roswell.

In the bottom of the first, Chad Kruse singled and advanced to second on a 1-3 ground out by Ryan Normoyle. During that defensive play, Gibbs caught a knee in the back of his calf, but staying in despite the pain.

"After that, he was pitching through that injury right there," said acting White Sands manager Andrew Parrish. "He was struggling with that. I know that was hurting him as well, but he got through it and did a great job. He kept them scoreless for four innings, five innings right there. He battled through it, we just didnt swing the bats early. Thats what weve got to do to win ball games."

Despite the injury, Gibbs got a second out but then Vincent Mejia singled, putting the Invaders up 1-0.

Mike McCarthy opened the bottom of the second with a triple but once again, Gibbs got two outs before Erick Gaylord singled to score McCarthy.

After that, Gibbs shut Roswell down through the sixth, while the Pupfish were unable to cross the plate vs. Shoemaker.

The Invaders got out of the fourth with a double play, then, with two outs in the fifth, Steven Rogers singled and Gibbs reached on an error that put runners at second and third, but George Ban flew out to center for the third out.

Both teams put one batter on in the sixth but couldnt score, then White Sands put runners on fist and second in the seventh, but Mark Leacox, who had doubled, was out at third on an unusual third to first double play, and the Invaders came back in the bottom of the stanza to score two runs.

Andrew Deeds opened the inning with a double and scored on a Matthew Faiman single and two-base error. Faiman then scored on a Kruse single.

The last two innings belonged to the relievers, and while Faiman got out of the eighth unscathed despite a single by Ban and throwing error, "Fish John Saavedra wasnt quite as lucky.

The first two batters he faced, Charles Dubanoski and McCarthy, singled, advanced on a wild pitch and, with two outs, scored on a double by Gaylord who stole second and came home on an error.

White Sands finally got on board in the ninth off relieve Jesus Carlos, who, Ebright said, was pitching on little rest.

"We just used him the other day and I just wanted to see what he could do with not a lot of rest and hell be just fine," the manager said.

Leacox walked and stole second, Ryan Pembroke singled then, with two outs, Ban walked to load the bases and Christian Ramirez hit a 2 RBI single. Mike Mendoza followed that with a 2 RBI single, but Carlos helped his own cause when Cody Collins hit back to the pitcher, who threw to first for the final out.

Ebright said the late comeback reminded him of the Invaders.

"Thats kind of the way we had been in the first six games," he said. "We were kind of lulled through the first five, six, seven innings. Thats the game of baseball. Its not like basketball you can just run the clock out or football you can take a knee. You have to play all night."

And, Parrish said, playing all night is what his team needs to do.

"As far as we go, we didnt swing early," he said. "As you can see, we didnt swing the rest of the night. So their pitcher did well. He kept us off balance a little bit, I guess you could say. He pitched well and we didnt hit it so he did his job. We have a great hitting team, and as you can see, right there at the end, we can put it together. Weve just got to start putting it together a little earlier."

The teams will continue the series at the Aquarium in Alamogordo Tuesday and Wednesday, and both coaches are thinking positive.

"Were going to do it," Parrish said. "Weve got two more games at home against them, and were going to get it done. Well be at home and everything will be good to go."

"Weve seen them in spring training. Weve seen them the last two nights and Im sure its going to be a couple of good baseball games," Ebright said. "The one thing Im happy about it that weve already hit at their field. Weve seen the backdrop. But again, theyre a good baseball team and it should be a couple of good games."

Invader streak stretches to six with victory over Pupfish

ROSWELL -- After five innings of not looking good at all, the Roswell Invaders bounced back yet again Sunday, going from a 5-0 deficit vs. White Sands to a 7-6 victory. And the key to the win was a pitcher, pinch hitter Jonathan Sa, who tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth before Erick Gaylord gave Roswell the one run edge. Jacob Cook then came in and got the Pupfish one-two-three in the ninth to give the Invaders their sixth straight win.

"Our guys keep battling," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "Kids kept battling. Tip your hat to his starting pitcher. We couldnt figure him out."

White Sands came into the game looking strong, as the bats made contact and starter Justin Kuks shut the Invaders down.

The Fish went up 3-0 in the second when Case Rigby singled; Cody Collins reached on an error then, after Rigby was called out trying to get home, George Ban doubled and Ryan Pembroke doubled Collins and Ban in. Pembroke then scored on a wild pitch before Ed Kohout got the final out.

White Sands left the bases juiced in the third, but added a pair in the fourth when Pembroke walked, Kuks reached on an error and back-to-back singles by J.J. Constantino and Christian Ramirez brought the runners in.

Roswell finally broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two when Chad Kruse doubled, Matthew Faiman walked then, with two outs, a wild pitch and a VIncent Mejia single brought the runners in.

The Invaders made it 5-3 in the sixth off reliever Matt Barger when Gaylord walked, stole second, went to third on a walk and hit batter then came home on a fielders choice.

Roswell left the bases loaded -- something both teams did several times Sunday -- when Chad Hadzinsky got the final out.

The Pupfish got the run back in the seventh on a walk to Rigby, who advanced on a wild pitch and came home on an error.

But once again, Rowell wouldnt go quietly, getting out of another bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth when they turned an error by first baseman Nate Theunissen into a double play that closed out the inning, then scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Sas heroics were set up when Faiman reached on a Pupfish error. With one out, Mejia and McCarthy each walked to load the bases, and this time, the runners came home,

Theunissen hit into a fielders choice that saw Faiman out at the plate, but reliever Michael Willis walked Andrew Deeds to force in Mejia and Sa came in to pinch hit, singling home two with a ball that bounced off the pitchers glove then took a bad hop past the infielder. Gaylord then singled in Deeds for what would be the winning run.

"Coach (Kevin) Dore and I had a feeling (about Sa), and thats what you do," Ebright said. "Had a feeling he could do it and we put him in there."
"They ended up getting runners on there then they got the hit when they needed it. Thats it. Thats baseball," said White Sands acting manager Andrew Parrish. "We just didnt get the timely hit when we needed it."

What made the win even sweeter for Roswell was that the team did do terrible early on.

"We didnt look good," Ebright said. "Offense, defense. We did not look good at all. It was just like we were kind of out of our rhythm. Maybe it was the early game, early time. I dont know what the reason was. We didnt have the enthusiasm we had until the second half, and a hit here and a hit there and good things happen."

The Pupfish out-hit the Invaders 11-8, and both teams made three errors. But 12 walks by four White Sands pitcher were enough to make the difference. Kuks, who was not involved in the decision, struck out 10 and gave up his first run of the season.

A.J. Martin got the win for Roswell with Cook getting the save.

The teams will meet again Monday in Roswell, and Parrish continued to think positive.

"Im not worried about what theyve got going," he said. "I know what weve got here and we can beat that team. We beat ourselves right there. As simple as that. They got the timely hit and we walked a few guys and that hurt us right there and once they got the hit they got the lead. But we can play with these guys any day. Im not worried about that. Weve got a squad."

Ebright said the six-game opening streak doesntworry him.

"No. I dont think you get nervous at all," he said. "Weve still got 64 more games. Its (a loss) going to happen. No team ever goes 70. Its not going to happen. Weve still got 64 more games. Ill take these as we go."

First pitch Monday is set for 6 p.m.

ALAMOGORDO -- Just as Cowboy coach Ryan Stevens predicted, Alpine closed out its series at White Sands with another victory, topping the Pupfish 7-4 Saturday to go 4-1 on the season.

"We just consistently controlled them the whole game," Stevens said. "That was more normal Cowboy-style play."

Except for the second, when the Cowboys put three runs on the board, neither team could get more than one run across the plate in any inning. After a 0-0 first, Alpine tok a lead it would never give up.

D.J. Johnson reached on an error, then, with one out, Kenshoku Takubo, Billy Crowe, Shane Youngdale and Derrick Fox all singled, with Crowe, Youngblood and Fox each getting RBIs.

The "Fish got a run back in the bottom of the stanza when Case Rigby hit a solo home run -- his first of the year -- but White Sands wasted back-to-back singles after that, stranding two.

Both sides added a run in the fourth. Cowboy pitcher Shane Youngdale homered for Alpine while Pupfish Chris DiBiasi singled and came home on a Ryan Pembroke single. Stevens, whos not shy about saying he doesnt like pitchers hitting, said he was surprised with Youngdales shot.

"Its a surprise any time a pitcher hits a home run," Stevens said. "He closed his eyes and swung as hard as he could."

Both teams again scored one in the fifth: Cowboy Johnson reached on an error, stole second then came home on a single by Brycen Bell. Chris Anklam led off the White Sands inning with a walk, then, after two outs, scored on an Anklam single.

Neither side scored in the sixth, then the Pupfish closed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh off relievers Josh Trejo and Matt Mara. Trejo walked the first three batters he faced, then Mara got the next three out, but a Mike Mendoza fly ball scored George Ban.

But that was the last Pupfish run, and Alpine added one in the eighth when Trejo singled, stole second and came home on a Herman single; and one in the ninth on a ground rule double by Johnson, a Bell single and a two-out White Sands error.

Stevens said his MVPs were not the best hitters on the day -- Bell was 3-for-3 with an RBI; Youngdale 2-for-3 with one run and RBI; Herman 3-for-5 with an RBI; and Fox 2-for-5 with and RBI -- but his pitchers.

Cruse managed to get out of the sixth with no Pupfish runs, despite a pair of errors in the outfield, and Maras work in the seventh.

"Those guys deserve MVP of the game. They were awesome," the manager said.

Only DiBiasi (2-for-3, one run) and Chris Collins (2-for-4) had multiple hits for White Sands.

The Cowboys now head home -- something Stevens said everyones ready for -- for their home opener vs. Taos Sunday at 6:05 p.m. Stevens said the Cowboys are ready for the Blizzard.

"Bring them on. Bring them on," he said. "They better sleep with one eye open."

The Pupfish head over the hill to face league leading (5-0) Roswell in a 5 p.m. Sunday matchup.

Weidman pitches Alpine to victory

ALAMOGORDO -- Bryce Weidman threw a two hitter through eight innings Friday, leading Alpine to a 7-1 victory over White Sands in the Aquarium.

Alpine manager Ryan Stevens called Weidman "the player of the game," noting "His command was spot on tonight."

The only Pupfish run came in the seventh, when Erik Nockleby was hit and advanced on a wild pitch. Pinch runner Mike Mendoza went to third on an error and scored on a fielders choice, but that was the only "Fish runner to cross the plate, as Weidman allowed his only two hits in the eighth, but no runs.

Carlos Camacho gave up a double and two walks in the ninth, but got out of the bases-loaded situation unscathed. The Cowboy offense, meanwhile, went up 2-0 in the second when D.J. Johnson singled and scored on a Billy Crowe double, with Weidman helping his own cause by singling in Crowe.

Alpine added one in the third on singles by Casanova Donaldson and Joel Carranza, with Donaldson scoring on a put out. They made it 5-0 in the sixth when Tyler Rost singled, went to third on an error then came home on a fly ball. Derrick Fox then walked and came around on singles by Donaldson and Eric Herman.

The Cowboys rounded out the scoring in the seventh when Brycen Bell singled, Tyler Rost reached on an error and, with two outs, Bell came home on Weidmans second single -- he was 2-for-4 in addition to his effort on the mound -- and Rost on a bases-loaded walk to Herman.

Still, despite all that, Stevens said it wasnt his teams best performance.

"It does make me feel good, but Im still not satisfied," he said. "I didnt think we played our best baseball. We hit the ball hard at times, but at the same times, there were still a few sloppy plays; leave runners on base; and striking out at the plate far too much. But as a whole, it was a good team-effort win. Weve got good team speed. We put the ball in play when we need to. We try to manufacture runs any way we can."

Herman, Donaldson and Joel Carranza each were 3-for-5, with Herman tallying one run and RBI and Donaldson 1 RBI.

The teams wrap up their five-game series Saturday at 6 p.m. in Alamogordo.

ALAMOGORDO -- It was another hit fest at the Aquarium in Alamogordo Thursday, as the Pupfish and Cowboys combined for 37 hits and 28 runs. But this time, it was Alpine that come out on top, earning a 16-12 victory despite an early start and late-game comeback by White Sands.

Pupfish starter Chris Peacock faced only 12 Alpine batters in the first three innings, meanwhile, Alpine starter Brian Smith gave up two runs in both the first and second innings.

Chris Mendoza singled, Mike Mendoza doubled him in then Cody Collins scored him on a single. In the second, Joey Friedman singled and after Chris Peacock reached on an error, J.J. Constantino brought him in with a single and Mendoza scored on a put out.

The third was scoreless on both side, then both sides managed runs before Alpine broke it open in the seventh.

The Cowboys made it 4-2 in the fourth then went on top 5-3 in the fifth before the Pupfish came back with two more in the bottom of the stanza on a Ryan Pembroke home run.

The Cowboys broke the tie in the sixth with three runs off three hits, and while the "Fish added another run in the bottom of the stanza, they never again led. Alpine put seven runs on the board in the seventh, with runs coming off a 2 RBI home run by Derrick Fox, an RBI triple by Casanova Donaldson; RBI double by Joel Carranza; a walk, single, wild pitch and RBI single by Billy Crowe, a rookie catcher from New York who got his first hit of the season, and went on to go 4-for-6 with 3 RBI and one run scored.

Sean Rockey and Dustin Sandberg are also rookies who saw their first hits Thursday. Alpine added a final run in the eighth on a walk by Herman and Sandberg double, but White Sands mounted a comeback try in the bottom of the inning.

Gilbert Barrera walked three, gave up one single and had a wild pitch to open the stanza -- bringing one run -- then Kris Barone got the first out, but Case Rigbys sac fly scored two, Collins followed with an BI single and after Pembroke reached on a dropped third strike and advanced on a wild pitch, Chris DiBiasi singled him in, but that was all the "Fish could manage.

Brycen Bell was 4-for-6 with two runs and RBI for Alpine; Donaldson 3-for-6 with three runs and an RBI; and Carranza 3-for-5 with three runs and RBI.

"We hit the ball well tonight, thats for sure," said Cowboy coach Ryan Stevens.

Collins and Ramirez were each 3-for-5 for White Sands, Collins with an RBI and Ramirez with two runs and RBI. Constantino was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mendoza 2-for-5 with three runs and anRBI.

Smith got the win and Peacock the loss, and even though his pitchers gave up 12 runs on 15 hits, Stevens wasnt too unhappy.

"Our pitchers, theyve got good stuff. Theyre just working out the kinks right now. Well be all right," he said. "I saw some good things out of them and I also saw some things I didnt like so much."

The teams will meet again Friday at 6 p.m. in the Aquarium.

ALAMOGORDO -- A bit of a struggle by Alpine starter Brad Orosey led to an 8-4 White Sands victory in the second game of the series between the Pupfish and Cowboys, but Alpine manager Ryan Stevens wasnt worried about the early-season loss.

"My starter, he just didnt throw well," Stevens said. "He was off. And we just had some bad breaks and they squirted a couple of balls up into the gap, but Im not worried. It was bound to happen."

After Cowboy Casanova Donaldson hit his second home run in as many days to put Alpine up 1-0 in the top of the first, the "Fish came back with four in the bottom of the stanza.

After J.J. Costantino started the inning off with a walk, Christian Ramirez reached on an error; Mike Mendoza singled in Costantino; Case Rigby walked and Cody Collins scored Ramirez with a sac fly, making it 2-1 White Sands. Chris DiBiasi then hit a 2 RBI double, and the Pupfish never again trailed.

They made it 5-1 in the second on a Constantino triple and Ramirez double, and 7-1 in the fourth on a Constantino walk, Ramirez triple and RBI sac fly by Mendoza.

Matt Gibbs gave up his second and third runs in the seventh, only one earned, when D.J. Johnson singled, Mike Dobre reached on an error and Johnson and pinch runner Billy Crowe scored on another error.

The Pupfish scored their final run off Matt Mara, in for Josh Trejo, who only allowed one hit in two innings, when Joey Friedman singled and Costantino singled him in. The Cowboys wrapped up the scoring in the ninth when Johnson, Crowe and Kenshoku Takubo walked and Brycen Bell hit a sacrifice off reliever Nick Alexander.

Centerfielder Constantino was 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored and 1 RBI. Ramirez was 2-for-5 with two runs and 2 RBI; and Mendoza 1-for-2 with with one run and 2 RBI.

Donaldson had another good day for the Cowboys, going 2-for-4 with a single and the home run.

Stevens said a few minor injuries -- including a hamstring pull by Dobre -- contributed to the loss, but he knows its early.

"Im not worried at all. Second game of the year, still working out some kinks. Well be all right."

The teams meet again Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Aquarium.

ALAMOGORDO -- After a long night with little sleep, Alpine had a slow start in their season opener vs. White Sands, but after the Pupfish took advantage of the Cowboys lack of rest for six innings, Alpine took the lead in the seventh and broke it open in the eighth, winning 8-5.

"I tell you what, Im proud of them. They showed a lot of resiliency," said Cowboy manager Ryan Stevens, explaining that after a successful meet and greet Monday night -- following three hours of community service Monday morning -- the team didnt pull into Alamogordo until 3:30 a.m. and was back up at 7 a.m. for the 10 a.m. game.

"Were going to come out. Were going to pitch well. Were going to play good defense. Were going to have good team speed and were going to manufacture runs any way we can. They made some errors early on that we didnt capitalize on, and weve got to do a better job than that. But as a whole, Im proud of them. Three-and-a-half, four hours of sleep, Im proud of them."

Both starting pitchers did a good job.

Pupfish starter Justin Kuks only allowed two Alpine runs, neither earned.

In the first, Eric Herman reached on a White Sands error, went to second on a fielders choice and third on a Joel Carranza single then came home on a D.J. Johnson single.

Johnson was hit by a pitch to open the fourth, went to second on an error, then came home on a Mike Castrignano single.

But that was all the Cowboys could manage through six, while the "Fish went up 2-1 in the bottom of the first off Castrignano.

JJ Costantino was hit to open the bottom of the stanza, Chris DiBiasi doubled then Costantino came in on consecutive putouts.

After Alpine tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, Mendoza singled in the bottom of the fourth, stole second and third and came home on a fly ball by Cody Collins.

That 3-2 score held through the sixth, keeping the full house of elementary schools students and their teachers -- Tuesday was Alamogordo Public Schools Day -- very happy.

But facing Pupfish reliever Matt Barger in the seventh, the Cowboys took the lead when Eric Herman ad Casanova Donaldson walked and, after stealing their way to second and third, scored on another White Sands error.

Josh Cruse, who got the win for Alpine, and Gilbert Barrera shut the Pupfish down in the sixth, seventh and eighth.

Barger walked Brian Milliman to open the top of the eighth, then with two out, Fox doubled, scoring Milliman; Herman doubled to score Fox and Chad Hadzinsky came to the mound and gave up a 2-2 home run to Donaldson before closing out the inning with a strikeout.

The Fish didnt go quietly, adding two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Kris Barone on a Case Rigby single and Collins home run -- Collins was 2-for-3 with one run scored and 3 RBI -- but it wasnt quite enough.

"On the offensive side, I was pretty happy with them, but on the defensive side, we need to get better," said White Sands manager Kevin Nunn. "We need to get more consistent. Just little things of making a routine play, can turn it into something positive. Because if it doesnt turn into something positive, then it makes the pitcher throw more pitches and an inning goes a little longer. So, I just told these guys, "Dont quit. Weve got to do the little things and as soon as were consistent doing the little things, the big things will fall into place for us."

Both managers were happy with their starting pitching and the home runs.

"We were lucky enough to snag (Donaldson) away from Roswell," Stevens said. "Hes been a great young man to have around in Alpine. Fans love him. Hes been working his butt off and he really wants to have a really big year and hes really committed to the cause. He wants to bring the championship back to Alpine."

"Its always nice to get that (first home run) out of the way," Nunn said. "Codys been working pretty hard. He came in not hitting very well, so hes spent a lot of time trying to get his timing back, so I was pretty happy with that."

"I was very happy with (Kuks)," Nunn said. "The first time I went out there (to the mound), he went, "Coach, this is my inning. I go, "All right, and the next time he turns around and gets a double play. So that was good."

"Their starter threw a really good game," Stevens agreed. "He really competed. He had a good fast ball. Good off speed. He really competed really well. I was very impressed with him. The key has always been for us is to get in the bullpen. Thats the way it was in the playoffs for us. Thats the way it was in the season last year. Get into their bullpen and see what happens."

Alpine will start Brad Orosey Wednesday while the Pupfish will counter with Matt Gibbs in a 6 p.m. start at the Aquarium.

ALAMOGORDO -- When the Pupfish open their season Tuesday with Alamogordo Public Schools Day, thatll be only the first of numerous special events planned for White Sands during the season.

Alamogordo assistant city manager Matt McNeile said the first thing the fans will notice when they come into the Aquarium is the press box and concession area is now painted in Pupfish colors. Pupfish logos are painted on the side of the buildings, and, in addition to the misters already in the dugouts and seating areas, team management has added a 10x10 inflatable misting station by concession stands, where fans can cool off while waiting for their food ands drink.

And that food and drink is going to have additions this year as well.

McNeile said theyre hoping for several new concessionaires this year, with local barbecue restaurant Cant Stop Smokin expected to have a booth for several if not all the Pupfish home games.

"So were excited about that," McNeile said.

Theyve added two two five-gallon tumblers "of whatever frozen beverage we want to put in there," to the beer and soft drinks already sold at the stadium, giving adults an added cool choice as well as youngsters, as the tumblers can sever frozen lemonade or margaritas.

A Wednesday drink special also sounds like it will appeal to several generations, depending on what its filled with.

"Because were playing in the Aquarium, were going to have a fishbowl drink, which is an 18-ounce, plastic fishbowl," McNeile said. "Well have nerds at the bottom and itll be a cosmopolitan drink with gummy fish floating around in it."

White Sands also has a number of special days planned in addition to the opener.

Tuesday, all students will be admitted for $2 each, and organizers are expecting 1,500-2,000 students to cheer on the "Fish on opening day.

Other nights include a mariachi night; Christmas in July, which, in conjunction with Toys for Tots, could be a 2-for-1 game; Rotary Night, in which the areas three Rotary Clubs will be honored; another 80s night, which was popular in 2012; and a "Bring your dog to the game" Sunday special, in which all dogs who bring theirb owners to the park will get half price tickets for those owners.

In addition to all that, theres also a new 10x10 baseball inflatable over the Pupfish dugout, with pyrotechnics on either side so when the teams are introduced and after White Sands home runs, fireworks will go off in celebration.

"Its going to be an exciting season," McNeile said.

ALAMOGORDO -- When the White Sands Pupfish open the season May 14 against Alpine, theyll be helmed by Kevin Nunn, a long-time baseball professional who hopes to take the "Fish to the league title.

"I do have a lot of experience at the professional level," Nunn said. "I got to see a lot of baseball over the years."

Nunn, a native of East Grand Forks, Minn., has been married for 19 years to wife, Christy, and has three children: TJ, Nolan and McKenna. ALAMOGORDO — There was no scoreboard, no lineups and Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn was the only official on the field, but Sunday, White Sands and Roswell opened spring training with workouts and a scrimmage at the Aquarium in Alamogordo.

And while it was just a scrimmage — and the two teams will meet several more times this week — there were fans in the stands cheering on the hopefuls from both teams.

The Invaders won 4-2, but the managers were more interested in looking at how their players performed than at any scores.

“I’m actually pretty happy,” said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. “Pretty happy so far. Hitting needs to come around a little bit, but you can tell these young guys are a little nervous and they’ve had at least a few months off, or maybe a year for some of them, so I think that’ll come around. But overall, I”m impressed with today. Pitchers as well. Held them to two runs. The wind was blowing like a tornado out to left and there’s some veteran guys a

ALAMOGORDO — The 2013 White Sands Pupfish might look somewhat familiar to fans who’ve been following the Pecos League since it started in 2011.

Not only is 2011 player Ernie Munoz this year’s manager, but he’s bringing back a number of his teammates.

“We wanted to bring some of the guys from the 2011 team who were really in touch with the city and the city liked them,” Munoz said. “They enjoyed playing for us. They did well for us, so we figured why not bring them back for another year?”

Those returners include Chris DiBiasi, who, Munoz said, is going to be a team leader as well as a fan favorite, whether playing at second or short.

“He’s a big hitter, he’s played in the higher leagues and we’re looking for him to come in and bring some firepower for us,” the manager said. “Hit some home runs and drive in a lot of runs.”

Other former Pupfish include Chris Anklam, Brett Mendoza, Joey Friedman (also a former Invader), Rob Rodriguez and Steve Lemmon

Scott Long, Athletic Trainer for the PupFish for the last two seasons, had a serious cycling accident on March 25th and will not be able to work with the team at the beginning of the season - possibly not at all this year depending upon his recovery from the head injury caused by this accident.

The White Sands Pupfish will hold its first annual golf tournament Friday June 28, 2013 at Desert Lakes Golf Course in Alamogordo at 2351 Hamilton Rd, Alamogordo, NM 88310. Cost is $75 per golfer. The Pupfish will offer a variety of prizes including tickets, jerseys and prizes including a Championship Baseball Bat the the Winner.

Desert Lakes, a public facility at the base of the Sacramento Mountains, features four sets of tees. The front nine is a tree-lined, parkland-style layout that highlights large greens with subtle undulations. The back nine, “the desert nine,” is cut out of Sonoran desert. Water hazards come into play on 11 of 18 holes. Alamogordo offers a year-round playing season, with summer highs in the 90s and moderate weather all winter long. Desert Lakes specializes in golf outings. Nearby are the towering gypsum sand dunes of White Sands National Monument, the Old West-style Oliver Lee State Park and the Space Hall of Fame. In early fall, hot-air balloons fill the sky as Alamogordo hosts the White Sands Balloon Festival.

The City of Alamogordo has just completed renovation of their city basketball/volleyball gym. The gym features state of the art rubber multi purpose floor. The gym has several Pupfish Trademarks. The center court features the Alamogordo Tiger and the WS Pupfish Logo. The Outfield net banner is hung in the Gym from the rafters. The baseline has Alamogordo written in the Pupfish Airhouse Miltype Font. Pupfish players are constantly in the gym in season from May to July during baseball season.

Former White Sands Pupfish Pitcher

Former White Sands Pupfish Pitcher Chris Smith signed a contract with the New York Yankees where he will join their minor league system. Smith pitched in White Sands under Keith Essary in 2011. He spent the 2012 season with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League. He also pitched for the Brisbane Bandits in the Australian Baseball League where he made the All Star Team.
