June 7 2019 The White Sands Pupfish held off the Alpine Cowboys 11-10 in a high-scoring game at Kokernot Field. White Sands collected 14 hits and overcame Alpine’s 22-hit attack to secure the victory, while both teams finished with two errors or more and Alpine committed five errors overall.
White Sands built an early 3-0 lead before Alpine answered with five runs in the second inning. The Pupfish regained momentum with three runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh, then added two runs in the ninth to finish with 11. Alpine scored twice in the fourth, followed by single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh, but went scoreless in the final two innings.
Ben Bavly led White Sands with four hits and two RBI, while Tevin Brown scored three runs and added two hits and an RBI. T. Bigford drove in two runs, and Peyton Newsom also had an RBI. Alpine’s Ellington Hopkins and C. Graves each recorded four hits, while Ely Gallego had three hits and two RBI. M. Traylor hit Alpine’s only home run of the game and finished with two RBI.
David Flores earned the win after allowing one hit and striking out two in two scoreless innings. Tanner Dickerson started for White Sands and allowed seven runs on 15 hits in four innings. Alpine starter Jose Hernandez worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits with six walks and six strikeouts. Ely Gallego took the loss after surrendering two runs in one inning.
